Have you sustained a brain injury?

We are all at risk of sustaining a brain injury which can arise from many different activities including slip and fall, motor vehicle accident, or through usage of faulty products. Many have shared the devastating impact a brain injury has had on their life. The symptoms of a brain injury can appear immediately after an accident or, in some cases, days or months following the initial injury. The Ontario Brain Injury Association defines Acquired Brain Injury as “a damage to the brain that occurs after birth from a traumatic or non-traumatic event. The injury has many different symptoms but is not related to a congenital disorder or degenerative disease, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis or Parkinson’s Disease.” The association classifies various types of brain injuries as following:

  1. Traumatic Brain Injury is damage to the brain caused by a traumatic event such as a blow to the head, a fall, a motor vehicle accident, or sports related injury.
  2. Non-Traumatic Brain Injury is damage to the brain caused by illness such as meningitis or encephalitis, oxygen deprivation (anoxia) or stroke.
  3. Concussion is a brain injury which can be caused by a sudden acceleration of the head and neck resulting from a blow or contact to the body. Loss of consciousness is not necessary to have sustained a concussion.

Thankfully, with growing awareness of this condition and advancements in science, there are medical treatments and support programs that can be of help to individuals with brain injuries.
